They named it Holy Land, but over the last two decades it's clear no one treated it that way.
A headless Jesus statue stands at the gated entrance with weeds growing from the once perfectly paved roads.
"I remember it," said Violetta Bojka of Cheshire. "But we didn't know the value of it at that time until we got older.
She came here during the 60's when they estimated 40-thousand were drawn here each year.
"Every Sunday we used to come up here, it was nice," Bojka said.
Blaisius Chevrolet is starting a non-profit organization completely independent from the city to try and preserve the integrity of the property.
Years haven't been kind to this miniature model of Jerusalem. It's overgrown and it's difficult to see what these buildings were intended to be.
And Waterbury mayor Neil O'Leary says it's going to take a lot of money to clean all this up.
"Did you ever think you'd own Holy Land?" News 8's Stephanie Simoni asked O'Leary.
"No I didn't think I'd own Holy Land until about six weeks ago," he said.
Originally the asking price was $750,000 a couple of years ago.
But, Mayor Neil O'Leary says he teamed up with local car dealership owner Fritz Blaisius purchased the neglected 20 acres for a price tag of 350 thousand dollars.
They're asking for community help too, starting a non-profit to renovate the site.
"We were worried, we didn't want to lose that identity for the city and I think it's a good thing for all Christian groups to come together and have a place to go worship," O'Leary said.
"A lot of people up there they do things like drugs, so for me it's a relief," said Omayra Velacquez, who lives in the area.
"I think it would teach a lot of younger kids a little bit more about religion," said Bojka.
