New Haven (WTNH) - People living on Hall Street in New Haven are Counting on 8 toget a warning out to neighbors. Someone is breaking into cars inthe middle of the day and stealing valuables inside.
Jason Caruso is an owner of one of the cars that have recentlybeen targeted. His vehicle was in the driveway when thieves brokein.
"A lot of items from the glove box were thrown on the floor, theseat," said Caruso.
His girlfriend's car along with six of his Hall Street neighborshad their cars broken into all on the same night.
"You lose a sense of security when something like this happens,"said Caruso.
But, it's not only solely happening in the nice Morris Coveneighborhood.
Overall, police say car break-ins are up over last year.
"Don't leave anything in your car in plain view or trust meyou will become a statistic," said Officer Joe Avery of the NewHaven Police Department.
News Channel 8 checked the stats in some districts. Carbreak-ins in the Morris Cove are down 11 percent, but in Westvillethey're reportedly up 56 percent and in Beaver Hills up a whopping70 percent.
In many cases, like Caruso, cars that are left unlocked makethem an easy rip off.
Caruso said he will not be making the same mistake again.
"Mine will now go in the garage, lights on the porch [will be]left on and [I'm] also adding two motion sensors," Caruso said.
