FAIRFIELD, Conn. (WTNH) -- Police said approximately 150-200 firearms, explosives and chemicals were discovered in a Fairfield home Tuesday.
Police, fire, hazmat, DEEP, ATF, and FBI are all still on the scene at 1625 Bronson Road.
The hazmat situation began when police received a call from a relative asking them to do a well-being check at the home.
Officials said the well-being check went fine, but then a few hours later there was a 911 call from the resident reporting a break in.
When police arrived they said the man seemed disoriented.
Upon investigating, the Bomb Squad discovered explosive materials and devices inside the home. Officials said those devices have since been detonated at a safe location.
Additionally, police said 150 to 200 firearms, and tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition are believed to be inside the home.
"As you can imagine, this is a volatile situation that requires a systematic process to first of all render the items safe, first of all determine what the items are, render them safe and then begin a thorough investigation," said Police Chief Gary MacNamara.
The suspect, who has not yet been identified, is 65 years old, and has no prior record. He was taken to the hospital for examination.
News 8 is told the suspect has a chemistry background and may have worked for a firearms company.
According to police, the house has been stabilized and neighbors are allowed back in their homes, but the street remains taped off.
The street is expected to be closed at least for the remainder of the day.
