STONINGTON, Conn. (WTNH) -- A 10-year-old boy called 911 Wednesday night reporting that his father was driving drunk and he feared for his life, police said.
The boy told police that he and his sister were riding in a vehicle with their father, and that he was in fear for his life, since his father was driving drunk at a high rate of speed.
According to police, the boy also said that he was considering jumping from the vehicle because he felt it was a better option than crashing at such high speeds.
Police said the 911 call was lost, and moments later they received multiple calls reporting a motor vehicle accident in the area, on I-95S near Exit 91 in Stonington.
Upon arrival, police discovered a two-car accident.
Police said the father, 49-year-old Owen Gilman, was operating a 2007 Mercedes Benz C230 when he rear-ended a Jeep Grand Cherokee.
According to police, the collision sent the Jeep and single male driver off the right shoulder and down an embankment, where the vehicle then rolled over.
The driver was taken to L&M Hospital for treatment of blunt force trauma and lacerations.
Gilman's children were taken to Westerly Hospital where they were evaluated and treated for lacerations.
Police said Gilman was uninjured and arrested after failing field sobriety tests.
Additionally, police said a significant amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia was found in plain view on the floor of the vehicle.
Gilman, of 88 Cooper Rd., Warwick, RI, was arrested and is being held on a $35,000 bond.
He is scheduled to be arraigned in New London later today.
