HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Trial has begun for a former Windsor Locks police sergeant accused of hindering an investigation of his son in a fatal car accident.
Robert Koistinen (KOY'-stih-nen) is charged with third-degree hindering prosecution, which carries up to five years in prison.
The Hartford Courant reports Robert Koistinen's lawyer told jurors Monday in Hartford Superior Court his client didn't know if his son had been driving recklessly or drinking before the crash and didn't interfere.
Michael Koistinen, also a police officer, is serving a five-year manslaughter sentence for the crash that killed 15-year-old bicyclist Henry Dang.
Prosecutors said Michael Koistinen was off-duty, intoxicated and speeding.
Two officers who responded to the accident testified they didn't see Robert Koistinen, the shift commander that night, interfere, or take his son away from the scene.
The father and son were fired.
