On a day when he should have been in school, 19-year old David Brown-Barrett stood before a judge facing charges of first degree assault and risk of injury to a minor in the death of 13-month old Ty'asia Allen.
Outside, angry family members of the suspect and the young victim had to be separated by court officers.
”We're talking about a baby that can't defend herself, a child that just learned how to walk and turned one year old two weeks ago, come on now, whose going to defend her,” said Gwen Morgin, a friend of the mother’s family.
Brown-Barrett is the boyfriend of the baby's mother, although he is not the father of the infant.
On Thursday the Weaver High School student was driven to St. Francis Hospital by a woman who had been flagged down by a female cousin.
The baby went into cardiac arrest and died a short time later.
No 9-1-1 call was made alerting police about the baby's condition.
“Ask them why they didn't call 9-1-1, ask them why they flagged down a car to take her to the emergency room, she could have got help on the spot,” said Crystal Faust, the baby’s grandmother.
Hartford police say they were told by the medical staff that the baby's injuries were consistent with trauma, possibly caused by a fist.
Police also say Brown-Barrett later admitted to them that he punched the 13 month old in the stomach because he lost her patience with her.
The baby's mother was not at the courthouse, a fact not lost on one friend of the victim's family.
'What does that tell you , she didn't show up today in defense of her own baby, how does that make sense?” Cheryl Faust asked.
Tonight, Brown Barrett is behind bars on a one million dollar bond... autopsy results show the baby's death was a homicide... detectives are now working to amend the charges.
