At schools in Meriden, students can bring their own devices like cell phones and tablets and use them in the classroom.
"We're 21st century, we're around technology,” said Kaliana Tom, a student at Maloney High School. “I think that if
we didn't embrace it in school then we're kind of just pushing it away."
"The teacher might say something, if you don't understand it might be beneficial to look it up really quick,” said Caleigh Bayer, a Platt high student.
The use of personal digital devices in school just started this year. It's a pilot program to see how it goes and it was supposed to end in November.
Tuesday, the Board of Education agreed to extend the technology through December 1. Parents and teachers News 8 spoke to seem to agree that it is a good idea.
"I'm a true advocate of technology and I think anything that can be impletmented in the schools that can help kids learn and love to learn better, I think it's a good idea,” said Joy Dutra, a teacher at Platt High.
There are rules of course:
-Devices may be used for instructional purposes and at the teacher's discretion.
-Devices must not disrupt the learning of others.
-Devices may not be used to tease, or bully others.
And some students admit, having such easy access to websites and apps isn’t always the best thing for learning.
“It's up to the student's discretion to control that,” said Caleidgh Bayer, a student at Platt.
