NEW FAIRFIELD, Conn. (WTNH) -- Police say a teen intruder was carrying a knife when he was shot and killed in what appeared to be an attempted home break-in.
Rain is often used as a metaphor for mood. Perhaps it's an over-used analogy, but there is no hiding the fact that a cloud hangs over the small town of New Fairfield.
"Took a day off, it's too hard," Brett Rasile said.
Rasile was a friend of 15-year-old Tyler Giuliano. Hours before police say Tyler dressed in black and put on a black ski mask, he spoke to Brett.
"I was just talking to him at 10 at night, just a few hours before this happened, on Skype, he was perfectly fine," Brett said. "I was playing games with him, having a good time, saying he had to go to bed, 10 o'clock is a good time to go to bed, so I said, alright, I'll see you later."
Tyler lived in the home next door to where the incident occurred, out front is where he was shot by his father Jeffrey. State Police tell News 8 Tyler was holding a knife and approached his father in a threatening manner. An autopsy reveals he died of multiple gunshot wounds.
A town of 14,000 is still trying to absorb how this could have happened.
"Close knit, and by and large, people are pretty devastated when something like this happens," one local resident said.
It rained in New Fairfield Friday, but even if the sun was shining, it wouldn't matter to some; a child is dead, a father grieves, a darkened community aghast in absolute surprise and sorrow.
"He didn't say anything about going out, going out late," Brett said, "I never even knew he had a ski mask or any of that stuff."
