BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (WTNH) -- At least one person was burned in a massive fire that struck several apartment buildings in Bridgeport early Tuesday.
Flames consumed the back of a six-unit apartment house on Bridgeport's Brook Street. One of those units was home to Beatrice Perez. She woke up to an alert neighbor banging on her door.
"The lady said it was on fire," Perez said. "I went to the back of the house. Flames was coming out. Made sure the kids was okay."
They made it out okay, in nothing but bed clothes and borrowed flip-flops, but there was a neighbor they saw in the flames with burned hands.
"They were black, though, like burnt bad," Perez said. "And she had soot all over her face and a bloody nose."
Fortunately, one of the residents was a brand new, off-duty firefighter.
"One of our rookie firefighters was staying there and he pulled one person out," said Asst. Chief Manual Firpi, Bridgeport FD.
That one woman was taken to Bridgeport Hospital for her burns. A few others were treated for minor smoke inhalation, but the big casualties were the apartment buildings. Dozens were evacuated as the flames raged. So many evacuated that they filled a city bus to keep warm.
Of the four buildings right next to each other, the middle two are charred wrecks. The view from the rear shows there aren't even floors left in one of them.
"We do believe the middle white house is probably a complete loss, but we're going to be working with the owners, working with building department," said Mayor Bill Finch.
Working to help about two dozen people left homeless. People like Perez. News 8 asked her the condition of her unit.
"Right now there's no unit," Perez said laughing.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
