Monroe, Conn. (WTNH) - A Monroe woman says her Facebook and e-mail accounts were hacked by a man who wanted nude photos of her.
The 20-year old victim reported the incident to police in June.
The victim had both her Gmail account and Facebook hacked into. The hacker then started sending email to the victim demanding nude pictures of herself to get back control of her accounts.
Katii Durrell is friends with the victim and says it was an upsetting situation. Durrell said, "She feels pretty violated, yeah."
The police were able to track down the hacker. They say it's a man, 19-year-old John Joaquim III. Joaquim is now charged with extortion and computer crimes. It's not clear if the two know each other, but it's put internet security on the minds of many.
Mary Cyr said, "When you're on facebook, you gotta watch who you talk to because it could be dangerous."
Cyr says she's always very careful with what she does on-line. "I change my password constantly so nobody knows it cause that's the only way you're gonna be safe," she said.
Others say, getting hacked is a possibility these days, so they would just abandon the accounts in question.
Durrell said, "I mean, I just think that like if someone was asking me to do that like I would just not do it and make a new account."
And even those close to this say, they're not surprised by it. "No, not in this day and age, unfortunately," Durrell said.
Joaquim surrendered to police Monday and was charged with extortion and computer crimes. He was released on a $7,500 bond. He will be arraigned in court on August 17th.
