NORWALK, Conn. (WTNH) -- School security is high priority these days. In Norwalk, some new technology designed to make schools safer was on display Wednesday.
"I've been in the security industry for over 30 years, and the weak link to any security has always been the glass," said Jim Chandler, Armor Solutions .
However, that may no longer be the case. With a new, transparent security material now available in Connecticut, that sticks to glass like a sticker, the windows of a home, school or vehicle just might be the path of most resistance.
Chandler heads the company distributing the product locally.
"After Sandy Hook is when I really started thinking about it, and I wanted to find a solution to protect glass," Chandler said.
"For schools, again, we can delay that aggressor from getting in if not ultimately keep him out," said Peter Fabian, Founder of Advanced Coatings Enterprises. "And, as we delay him, emergency responders are getting closer and closer. Students are getting their way to safe rooms or even out of the school."
If you've ever had a baseball through your window, you know what it's like. However, after applying a layer to normal house windows the glass is unbreakable.
It works as a one-way shield. In other words, the good guys can fire back, through the same glass.
"The beauty of our product is, you can shoot out," said Fabian. "So, as the aggressor is trying to shoot in, you can return fire and take him out even before he unloads his weapon."
And, at a cost and weight that's fractional to older armoring materials, they say the only thing that isn't a breakthrough is bad guys and their bullets.
The company is giving away a number of school installations based on need. To find out how your school can apply visit www.acesafeschoolproject.org .
