BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (WTNH)-- The federally funded "Head Start" program is just one of the many programs affected by the government shutdown. Head start is a early education program for low income children.
And, Wednesday Governor Dannel Malloy said the state will provide $800,000 to keep Bridgeport's program open through the end of the month.
For Bridgeport mom Melanie Rhodes reopening Head Start means she can tell her new employer she can take the job
"I'll be ecstatic happy. I wont have stress, I'll have peace and I can concentrate making a better life for myself," said Melanie Rhodes.
The Head Start program at ABCD in Bridgeport closed last Monday putting parents in a panic.
Now Malloy is stepping in, using state department of education funds to reopen at least until November. But he says there is no guarantee he can keep state money coming if federal government shutdown drags on.
"This is not a final notice. We are going to continue to try to help where we can. We can't help everywhere. We don't have pots of money applicable to every problem in the state that's caused by this shutdown. But this is a special one and we found it," said Malloy.
A private foundation had offered to donate money for ABCD to reopen but the director says there were strings attached and loopholes.
"The Arnold dollars is not a gift horse as been suggested. This is a more realistic solution. It will actually allow us as an agency to much more comfortably begin administering the services," said Charles Tisdale, Director of ABCD.
For now state dollars will allow Head Start to operate and parents to keep working. Parents have bitter feelings toward Washington.
"I think they thinking about their own pockets and want to blame fingers on somebody instead of blaming themselves," said Rhodes.
