ENFIELD, Conn. (WTNH/AP) — An alligator that was seen roaming a residential neighborhood in Enfield has been caught near the Connecticut River.
Enfield police said the they were called out around to the Oak Ave. area 7 a.m. Friday after an alligator was found. The gator was about three feet long.
Authorities said it was found wearing a collar and a leash. It was not immediately clear where the animal came from.
Under state regulations, it is illegal to import or possess an alligator. Violators faces a $1,000 fine as a civil penalty. They can also be found guilty of a Class C misdemeanor, and serve up to 3 months in jail and fine of up to $500.

A representative from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection responded to the situation along with animal control officers and Enfield police.
DEEP spokesman Dennis Schain said the alligator would be sent to an animal rescue facility in North Andover, Mass.
