HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut environmental officers shot and killed a black bear Wednesday in a park in the state's capital city.
Officials said the young male was the same one that had been aggressive toward people earlier in the summer.
The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said the animal had been tagged after it charged at people in Barkhamsted, including chasing a man into his cellar.
"Once bears become aggressive like this, they can no longer be safely relocated," DEEP Deputy Commissioner Susan Whalen said.
Another black bear was trapped and euthanized Sept. 2 in Madison, after officials said it also had been aggressive toward people on several occasions. Officials said that bear had been fed by at least one resident.
The Hartford bear, described as 18 to 20-months old and weighing about 150 pounds, had been seen Tuesday in Keney Park, and was euthanized when it returned and moved into heavy brush.
Several bears have been relocated from populated areas in Connecticut this year, and at least two men have charged with illegally killing bears on their property or that of neighbors.
The DEEP said most black bears are not aggressive and can easily be frightened away.
The agency said there are about 500 bears in the state and people should be careful not to feed them or leave food scraps or pet food, including birdseed, where bears can get access.
Last year, the DEEP said, it received nearly 3,000 bear sighting reports from 122 of Connecticut's 169 towns.
