BLOOMFIELD, Conn. (WTNH)-- The Hartford half marathon takes place this weekend and among the thousands of runners, a blind war hero.
A last minute run before retired Air Force Staff Sgt. Michael Malarsie runs the Hartford half marathon.
"I actually, honestly, don't enjoy running, but I love finishing. That feeling is something that I missed," said Malarsie.
A feeling of freedom even if he runs with a guide.
Michael is blind. He lost his sight when an IED went off in Kandahar, Afghanistan nearly four years ago.
"It's a reminder to always try to be better, to reach whatever goals that I set," said Malarsie.
One goal he did not expect to reach was marriage.
While recovering from his injuries, he met Jesse. Her husband was one of the three soldiers who died in the explosion that blinded Michael.
"There is something about that girl and I never believed in love at first sight. I thought it was something made up, especially for a blind guy," said Malarsie.
"I didn't have really any hope left. He wasn't the only one who needed to be rescued," said Jesse Malarsie. "There was some divine help there."
They married soon after and now have two children together. Jesse has a daughter from her first marriage.
Now they live in Texas, but came to Connecticut so that Michael can run Saturday's race with Team Fidelco. The organization gave him his dog and in some ways, gave him back his sight.
"Fidelco gave me my freedom, basically," said Malarsie."This happened and I went through an entire transformation, and it has shifted my focus to family, friends, how can I benefit other people."
