BRISTOL, Conn. (WTNH)-- Aaron Hernandez is from Bristol and the arrest of a man who was once a local success story has really cast a dark cloud over that city.
News 8's Nneka Nwosu was at the Boys and Girls Club in Bristol where Hernandez spent time as a child.
Raking and laying mulch. Today, these boys and girls club campers are garners. But one day, they can be whatever they want to be.
"I think we teach these kids how to dream. How to create those dreams and then it's our job to help them achieve those dreams," said Michael Suchopar, Bristol Boys and Girls Club, Executive Director.
Kids are taught to succeed by working hard and working together.
"I learned if you help other people, that will get you further," Madison Gunn, Boys and Girls Club member.
It's a lesson taught to everyone who comes there for camp or to play sports, like Bristol native Aaron Hernandez.
Former New England Patriots Tight End Aaron Hernandez spent a lot of time at the Boys and Girls Club as a kid. He is currently being held on murder charges in a Massachusetts prison.
But the folks there say his story is not their story.
"We are just a great community and some people are bashing us to be the community that we are not," said Natalie Feliciano, Boy and Girls Club member.
"What one person may be involved in cannot possibly define a community, and this community is so big and does so many great things for kids and adults and seniors," said Suchopar.
