AVON, Conn. (WTNH) -- Three units in one building were destroyed early Thursday after fire ripped through an Avon condo complex.
Hot spots continued to vent hours after a building in a gated Avon golf community went up in flames before dawn Thursday.
"The smoke was intense, and I just kept hearing emergency vehicles coming, so I wanted to check it out," said neighbor Phyllis Butler.
Especially given that she knows at least one of the neighbors affected. Butler has lived at Farmington Woods for 27 years.
"He just lost his home, everything in it," said Butler. "He woke up to flames and extreme heat on his face. How would anyone react to that?"
However, it could have been much worse.
"We had one minor injury of a firefighter, but they've been treated and released on the scene," said Chief Michael Trick, Avon FD.
And, might indeed have been if not for previous experience at this 1100-unit community, more than 40 years old.
"We've had fires in the past at Farmington Woods," said Lou Parrott, Farmington Woods Operations Manager. "The last one was a garage fire on Canterbury."
"We've even designed a ladder truck around this condo complex, to get in and out of these tight circles," said Chief Trick.
News 8 is told the building was constructed in the 1970s, housing five units, three of which were destroyed this morning, the other two also sustained damage.
"It probably is the biggest. The five-family one's the biggest," said Parrott. "We've had four-families, but this is the biggest one here at Farmington Woods."
Further property and very possibly lives were saved by yet another factor.
"This kept it from getting even further, because of the fire stopping in the fire walls in the units," said Chief Trick.
