Southwick, Mass. (WTNH) - The body of a Suffield man was pulled from a Massachusetts lake Monday following an apparent drowning.
Authorities say 22-year-old Larry Cauley of Suffield jumped from a boat, and his body was later found in Lake Congamond..
On Monday, Massachusetts authorities lifted the body of a young man out of the waters of Lake Congamond. Roderick Campbell keeps playing the events over and over in his head.
"The guy says, "Stop! Save me! Stop! Save me! I can't swim! I'm drowning! I'm drowning!" Campbell said. When asked if heard this clearly, he said, "Yeah - yeah. Just like you can hear anything at night."
It was around 1:00am Sunday morning when a 22-year-old man entered the lake from a pontoon boat, and then disappeared. Three friends jumped in for a rescue, with no success.
"They stayed right out there, backed the boat up, trying to throw life jackets, or wherever the noise was coming from. It would have been fine if he could have stayed afloat. They could have keyed in on him, got him," said Chief Mark Krynicki of the Southwick, Massachusetts Police Department.
Suffield, Connecticut officers identified the missing man as Larry Cauley, a 2007 graduate of Suffield High School. His family was profiled a few years ago on ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition."
"This male was not a very good swimmer, and required assistance," Krynicki said.
It would take more than a day for Massachusetts dive teams to locate the body because of heavy vegetation and dark waters. Campbell expected this outcome, but expectation doesn't lessen the shock of the discovery.
"I can't say much. It's a tragedy. It happens, but, sad to hear it," said Campbell.
