(WTNH) -- Unhealthy air quality hugged most of Connecticut Wednesday. The hot, humid weather is intensifying pollutants, including the pollen count.
"I've been a little sluggish lately," said Mike Tatangelo.
The thick heavy air adds to the misery allergy sufferers are already feeling.
"I don't know what's going on with the grasses, but I'm allergic to mix grasses and lately when they're cutting and everything, it's been making my eyes water," Tatangelo said.
Doctors point to the ever changing weather pattern for magnifying this year's fall allergens.
"It' been warmer over the summer and into the fall months and so we're seeing a longer season for ragweed and mold, and that's producing more pollens and the season is extending longer," said Dr. Christine Gould, St. Vincent's Medical Center.
Dr. Gould says patients with allergies and other respiratory illnesses should be mindful to poor air quality alerts.
"What we're seeing is the air quality reports are showing, we have many more pollen and pollutants in the air and if you're an allergy sufferer that means that is really going to aggravate your condition," said Dr. Gould.
People are not the only ones affected, four legged friends also have allergy symptoms.
"Pets get irritated, their eyes, their nose," Dr. Gould said. "They do a lot of licking their paws. They're trying to tell you they are uncomfortable."
Relief from ragweed and mold, Dr. Gould says, may not come until the first frost of the season.
Some reminders to allergy sufferers: you may want to limit your time outdoors, take showers before you go to sleep and bathe your pets.
