NEW MILFORD, Conn. (WTNH)-- An historic bridge a one state park is off limits to walkers and hikers after being hit by vandals.
Apparently, those thieves walked away with a heavy steel plate that is part of the floor of the bridge at Lovers Leap State Park in New Milford.
The bridge at Lovers Leap State Park stands high above the Housatonic River. Bikers and walkers use it to access more than 150 acres of trails and scenic views.
"I enjoy it. It's nice, definitely better than it used to be. The bridge, that's for sure," said J.C. Sawyer, New Milford resident.
But the beloved bridge is now closed.
Neighbors in the area told police they heard teens on the bridge Saturday night. The town checked it out and found a four foot by ten foot panel missing.
"We had added some components to the bridge several years ago to stop them from falling out," said Michael Zarba, New Milford Public Works Director. "It didn't just slide out into the water."
When asked if it's pretty clear that it was vandalism, Zarba said,"I would say that's the case right now."
The bridge was first constructed in the late 19th century. It was renovated and redone several times, most recently in 2006. The people who visit this park say it's really nice to be able to walk over the bridge and they're disappointed to see it closed.
"People shouldn't be doing stuff like this. Takes a lot of money to fix something like that," said Sawyer."It's a lot nicer with it fixed."
The town hopes to get it fixed within the next few weeks. So that lovers of Lovers Leap can get back to enjoying the view.
