WATERTOWN, Conn. (WTNH) -- A contractor volunteered to put a new roof on a home of a Watertown woman who is battling cancer.
The contractor, Todd Mills, heard about the woman's plight and offered to do the job for free.
"My goal is just to help what little she has saved to keep it saved," he said. "When I first talked to her and told her what I was doing just a couple of days ago, she was quite shocked'
His generosity led to a outpouring of good.
When Mills told his suppliers what he was doing they stepped up and donated shingles and other materials.
Then a neighborhood deli offered to provide free food.
As for a crew to get the job done, that also was not a problem.
"I just said what I want to do and they all volunteered," Mills said. "I didn't ask anybody to do this with me. My friends and family were there to chip in and to help do the deed."
Now the woman is getting a brand new roof for free, a project that would have otherwise cost about $10,000.
All proof that one good deed can lead to many others.
"I'm not usually this sensitive, but just doing a good thing. I like to help people here and there and this is probably the biggest thing I've ever done for anyone," Mills said. "Maybe I should do it more often."
When the fix on the roof is completed, Mills promises to come back and also power wash the vinyl siding on the house and repair any damage inside.
