MIDDLEFIELD, Conn. (WTNH)-- On Wednesday, the Middlefield Volunteer Fire Company will hold a memorial service for those who lost their lives on September 11th.
In the small town of Middlefield, life flows gently. Even at the local fire department.
"Here is very slow, and with that we'll get out on the road," said Ken Blake, a firefighter.
With few emergencies to run out to in a typical day, firefighter Ken Blake likes to use the back room of the firehouse as a place to relax and read.
"I was just reading this about...he's a friend of mine, good friend of mine," said Blake.
This time of year, he also thinks about where he was some 12 years ago.
"When you see those pictures, it just, to think of what's happening to those people on the plane, in the building, and then you hear the stories, how can you not be touched," said Blake.
It's a day always fresh in the minds of those that volunteer there. A memorial with a piece of Tower One stands next to where their fire trucks are housed.
On September 11th, 343 firefighters and paramedics were killed in the attacks, which is why firefighters there in Middlefield say it's so important to take time to pause and remember.
And Tuesday, members of the community will have the opportunity to do just that as a memorial service.
"It's our way to connect with everyone who was around that day and teach people, and give them that why we do what we do, and to appreciate what we do when we do it, because you never know when it's your last day," said Blake.
