East Haddam, Conn. (WTNH/AP) -- A brush fire consumed more than 50 acres of land at Devils Hopyard State Park in East Haddam.
The fire threatened two nearby homes on Jones Hill Road, near the intersection of Hopyard Road. Firefighters conduced a controlled burn in order to protect these houses.
No injuries were reported.
Firefighters say the fire may have been burning for hours before it was discovered.
More than 100 firefighters from 15 towns responded to the fire Monday night but the difficult terrain forced officials to pull crews out of the heavily wooded area until Tuesday morning. Officials say the fire was fueled by dead hemlock trees and dry, windy conditions.
Crews were stationed at the state park overnight waiting for daylight to get back and fight the flames.
A Red Flag Warning is in effect across Connecticut because of the fire danger.
According to the National Weather Service, "a red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are expected or occurring. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and dry fuels will create explosive fire growth potential."
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
