PORTLAND, Conn. (WTNH)-- The Arrigoni bridge has been standing tall over the Connecticut River since the 1930s. There's a man who liked it so much he built his own.
Eighty-year-old Joe Virgadula enjoys his retirement.
"No, I have to leave that and go somewhere else," said Virgadula.
He may not be employed but he's still working.
His latest creation...
"You have to be very patient," said Virgadula.
A four foot replica of the Arrigoni Bridge that connects Middletown and Portland, Connecticut.
"It's in dedication to my father and all the work he did to help build the bridge," said Virgadula.
It's smaller than the last one he finished a month ago.
"The big one was five feet. This one might be four feet. I like the different view of it," said Virgadula.
Back in the 1930s, it took construction workers two years to build the Arrigoni Bridge. For Joe, it took just three months.
"Without this work, you couldn't possibly build the bridge. I see it all," said Virgadula.
Like a bridge, Joe has those that support him, like his wife Ginny.
"We've been married 56 years," said Virgadula.
But Joe will never tell you that.
"She didn't come down there three times when I was working on the bridge and we had a debate about the color of the water," said Virgadula.
However, spend some time with the two of them and you'll know what a team they truly are.
"You want to turn it around, why don't you get on the other side Joe, alright," said Ginny Virgadula.
