EW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- Growing a healthy community, one garden at a time. It's just one idea behind New Haven's Food Summit.
They are trying to deal with the 23 percent obesity rate plaguing the elm city.
Brown rice sushi, and feet away they were making black eyed pea salad; culinary tastes collide for what's been dubbed New Haven's Food Action Plan.
"We thought as a way to start off how we're all going to work together to make change around food in our city and work on that plan, we'd first bring people together to make lunch," said Tagan Engle, New Haven Policy Council.
"Soul food is a healthy dish," said Sandra Pittman, Sandra's Next Generation.
With her curry chicken salad in lettuce, Pittman says what's good for the soul can be good for your waistline.
"Still have the comfort food, still have the love," said Pittman, "just add other ingredients to go along with it."
All of the food is healthy, some of it is even locally grown, and the idea behind the Food Action Plan is to get more healthy foods in New Haven homes.
"Addressing obesity, because we have a very high obesity rate, especially in the black community."
And among New Haven children. In a recent study with more than 1,000 public school 5th and 6th graders, 50 percent of them weighed in as overweight or obese.
One group, the Food Policy Council armed with a plan, wants to educate, make fresh food more accessible, and plant more urban farms.
"We're changing the way people source their food and sourcing their food locally is really the best case scenario in getting nutritious food in your system," said Will Allen, "Growing Power."
"We're not trying to do this all at once, the idea of today is to say let's look at the whole plan and let's pick few things we can work on right away," said Engle.
Trying to slim down residents one low calorie, fresh meal at a time.
