NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- After nearly a century, an Elm City staple is closing it's doors.
Their days are numbered, but there's no shortage of memories at Savitt Jewelers. After 92 years, they're closing their doors for good.
Bob Savitt opened the doors to his jewelry store back in 1919.
"He came over from Russia with his family and started as a paper boy in Springfield."
92 years later his three generations have been running the show, including Mike Rosenthal's, his wife Faith Savitt Rosenthal and her brother Richard Savitt.
"I'm getting to the point where I'm selling engagement rings to children of the people I sold engagement rings to in the 70's and 90's," Rosenthal said. "It kind of shocked me."
Just last week, the owners decided it was time to sell their final diamonds and pearls and start packing up the precious memories.
Rosenthal says there are too many, but he remembers being a part of at least two couples' magical moment.
"He brought her in to get a watch and while they were here they got down on one knee and proposed," he recalled. "It was terrific."
The family says they won't forget the extended family they've adopted over the years.
"It's like family," Rosenthal said. "I have people who come in every single year, even when the economy is bad. If they can't afford something they at least come in and say hello."
The owners say the popular items that are selling quickly are diamonds. The doors will close for good on June 30.
