Nearly 12 years in the making, part of the Shoreline Greenway Trail is now complete.
It will eventually span 25 miles from Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven, to Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison.
"And it will connect with the East Coast Greenway there, which goes from Maine from Florida, so this part of a national trail system," said Chip Angel, Chair of the Shoreline Greenway Trail.
Thursday, a key link of the trail was finished, what officials call the 'walkway across the marsh' at Hammonasset.
It's an added attraction for the 2 million runners, bikers, and beach-goers who visit Hammonasset each year.
"Trails have become an incredibly important resource for Connecticut," said Susan Whalen, CT DEEP. "They allow all kinds of citizens of all kinds of abilities to get out and enjoy the outdoors."
And this section of the Shoreline Greenway Trail was built almost entirely by volunteers.
"100 years from now when people are still enjoying the productive salt marsh here and the beautiful rocks that you see on this beach and this park, they may not remember our names, but I think they'll look back and say we had pretty good wisdom to work hard to conserve this area and to see this happen for the future," said Phil Miller.
