NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)-- A New Haven homeowner found a burglar inside his house, caught him and kept him there until police arrived.
"I think the amount of rage that was coming out of me, just my whole demeanor at that point, I think he realized that he picked the wrong house," said Jason Bayer.
A New Haven couple were victims of a home invasion. They were awakened after hearing noises coming from the front door around 9:00 in the 100 block of Concord Street. The couple ran down the stairs to check on things.
"I came sort of down to the middle the stairs, so I saw the silhouette of a man in the door," said Angela Marino.
The suspect entered through an unlocked front porch door. At 6' 3", weighing 320 lbs., Bayer came face to face with the intruder
"At that point the person was cowering in the corner trying to hide behind my stuff still and they stood up and started to come at me," said Bayer.
The would-be burglar lunged at the homeowner.
"The only thing I said was what are you doing in my house? And, as I was getting those words out he was coming at me," said Bayer.
In fear for his safety, Bayer hit the suspect in the face with his fist.
"At which point, I struck the person hard enough to make them fall," said Bayer.
The suspect collapsed onto a table.
The would-be thief tried to escape, realizing he locked himself in.
"In the fluttering, the nervousness in that moment he inadvertently locked the top dead bolt," said Bayer.
The residents held the home invasion suspect until officers could arrive. Cops put 43-year-old, Vernon McCoy in handcuffs.
The homeowners say next time they'll make sure to lock it up.
"Was I the first door or was I the 51st, and this one happened to be unlocked," said Bayer.
McCoy was charged with burglary and criminal mischief.
As for the homeowners, they're okay, just a bit shaken up.
