Planet Fitness in East Haven turned into more than just a place to get healthy. It became a place to help spread a little bit of healing.
For a few hours Wednesday; only about three miles from the crash site, Planet Fitness teamed up with News 8 to help raise money to pay for the funerals of 13-year-old Sade Brantley and 1-year-old Madisyn Mitchell.
"It's just been overwhelming. To see a community come together to help a family. East Haven has done a great job. We've also had donations coming in from other area towns and it's real touching," said Jerry Mastrangelo, owner Planet Fitness.
With our staff there, the uncle of the victims, Tyrese Mitchell.
"We never expected anything like this to happen in a million years. We are definitely trying to get through it. So it is a sign of relief to know that we have the community coming together helping us," said Mitchell.
The people who pitched in Wednesday, didn't want to go on camera. They say they just wanted to do the right thing and help a family through the unthinkable.
The girl's uncle says his family is still trying to grasp what happened. But the help with the financial burden will never be forgotten.
"Right now our hearts are still heavy you know, it's still in our head that this could never happen. And so we are definitely just trying to cope with it. And the love of the community throughout the whole process has been heartwarming to my whole family. And we definitely just want to express our gratitude and let you guys know that we are very appreciative of it," said Mitchell.
That event raised $5,000 for the family and if you would like to help you still have time.
