NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)-- The actor James Gandolfini may have been from New Jersey but there were many people here in Connecticut who knew him.
You may have even dined at the local restaurant where the owner and employees regularly served members of The Soprano's cast.
Walk into Goodfella's Restuarant in New Haven, and instantly you are transported to the movie by the same name or the television series, "The Sopranos." A picture of James Gandolfini, the man who brought Tony Soprano to life, greets you at the door.
"He's a real nice guy, really down to earth, nothing like the character, I mean, he was a really nice guy. We took a picture with him and he had my girlfriend sit on his lap in front of everyone," said Gennaro Iannaccone, Chef and owner of Goodfellas.
Fifty one-year-old Gandolfini died Wednesday. As a tribute, the restaurant will play episodes of the HBO series while visitors dine.
"That's sad. Sad for us," said Iannaccone.
Iannaccone and Gandolfini spent time together at many events throughout Connecticut.
And recently, the New Haven restaurant produced a Soprano's style commercial.
"We did a model towards that same start in New York, but we say, 'coming to New Haven,' instead of coming to New York," said Iannaccone.
Though he and many of the other restaurant employees have met James Gandolfini, he never got the chance to dine at Goodfellas. But the restaurant says it has a meal that Tony Soprano would enjoy, the Porterhouse Veal Chop.
"I really really wish he would have. There was an opportunity, but it just didn't pan out," said Iannaccone.
Gandolfini didn't get a chance to eat at Goodfella's, but he did visit the Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport in 2000 to shoot a scene for The Sopranos.
