EAST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)-- The humidity on top of the hot temperatures is making it nearly unbearable for folks without air conditioning. Many are heading to their local hardware stores, looking for some relief.
The recent heat and humidity has left residents rushing to cool down.
"It's really bad out there today and there's no shade because we're up on top of the bridge, so it's really hot," said Kathy Barton, customer.
The heat means business for stores like Goody's in East Haven, which has seen AC units and fans fly off its shelves this week.
"Right now a lot of fans. Fans are a big item of the day today," said Dave Katz, owner of Goody's.
He gets in daily shipments and says he plans how much to order by watching News 8.
"Gil and all the other people are great so if they say there's going to be a heat wave coming up, we listen to you guys, we order extra fans, ACs,so we always try to prepare. That way we don't run out of stuff," said Katz.
Blinds are also a hot ticket item.
"It keeps the sunlight out, lets light in heat out. Keeps the house cooler so it does get as hot it does work," said Katz.
Those who work outside rely on cool neck scarves which have been so popular this particular store is sold out of them.
"It's bad, it's really humid out there to keep the guys cool. We buy the scarves as well as the fans to put around their necks to keep them cool," said Barton.
They're loading up a truck for another delivery of fans and AC units, this one going to a local nursing home. There's another truck coming in for more deliveries. They're expecting to be this busy through the week.
