CHESHIRE, Conn. (WTNH) -- Last Thursday, a woman was bitten by a skunk that tested positive for rabies.
There's a plush skunk hiding underneath some bushes at the entrance of Cheshire Animal Control, about the only skunk you should really see in the daylight.
"There does seem to be an ebb and a flow, where we say they have a Spring fling and a last hurrah in the Fall," said April Leiler, Cheshire Animal Control.
Animal Control has been busy lately, dealing with wild animals infected with the dreaded "r" word: rabies.
"We've had several raccoons and skunks test positive for rabies lately, this isn't different, we put down a lot of raccoons and skunks that are acting sick," Leiler said.
The problem is aggressiveness towards domesticated animals or people.
So you may not be surprised to hear that dogs in Cheshire attacked a rabid skunk and killed it. The dogs are okay. What may surprise you is that a skunk attacked a human.
"A lady was moving some things around in her garage, and she felt something against the back of her hands," said Leiler. "She thought it was her dog, so she went to push it away and it was actually a skunk that was coming up against her, biting back of her, and when she pushed against it, it bit her hand and broke the skin."
So if you see a real nocturnal animal acting funny, call police or call Leiler. In the meantime, make sure your pets are up-to-date on vaccinations.
"In this case we had three test positive, lots of time I'll shoot something that was rabid and dispose of it because it wasn't in contact with anything and I don't know," said Leiler.
