NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)-- A crash Thursday morning killed two people and blocked off part of Whalley avenue for most of the day.
The car became a mangled mess of metal, a service station caved in and police swarmed the area.
"You would have to be driving crazy for you to go and do something like that," said Angel Lugo, West Haven.
Surveillance cameras down at Megill's sit a tenth of a mile from the crash site on Whalley Avenue.
"We couldn't believe what we saw, it was bad," said Michael McNamara.
Megill's owner Michael McNamara went to review the footage where it shows the other traffic speed and then the driver flies by.
Before he can point it out, the car is out of the frame.
Seconds later police say it hit a curb, went air borne traveling 90 feet, clipped the canopy, and landed on its side.
Police say two died on impact, the other amazingly walked out and is now at the hospital. Family stood at police lines, waiting for word.
"This is one of the most tragic accidents we've seen in quite a while in New Haven," said Officer David Hartman, New Haven Police.
That sentiment was felt by onlookers wandering just how fast they were going, why the speed, and who was in the car.
"I've seen a lot of things like this happen in all my years of towing, you never want to see someone injured. Cars come and go, but people can't," said an onlooker.
And even though they have not released the names of the victims, many hearts in the community are heavy with the loss.
It was learned by friends who say they knew a man inside the car, his girlfriend had recently passed away and now a child is left without both parents.
