EAST LYME, Conn. (WTNH)-- Multiple reports of coyotes snatching up furry friends have been surfacing in East Lyme.
While the biggest concern may be about coyotes, there are also bobcats and fisher cats out there.
A bobcat was seen on Cross Road in Waterford. Just one indication these wild animals are around.
"I've had probably about a hundred calls of people reporting their cats missing," said Robert Yuchniuk, Animal Control Officer.
Robert Yuchniak is warning folks about coyotes, foxes, fisher cats and bobcats which could prey on their pets.
"I've had documented reports of people's small dogs being grabbed and carried off right in front of them. I"ve had to go out and recover partially eaten pets," said Yuchniuk.
Jack's owner once saw a coyote in the Waterford neighborhood.
"He was going up the middle of the street and I watched him and he went between two houses," said David Orlosky, Waterford.
That was a couple of years ago.
"Looked very healthy. We did see a bobcat up the top of the hill here by the power lines. That was last year and she had two cats with her," said Orlosky.
The animal control officer says the reason there are so many of these wild animals out there is the big neighborhoods. There are a lot of houses but all along the roads there are big stretches of woods and that is where the wild animals live.
If you see a wild animal you can protect your pet, but be careful.
"So don't actually try to grab them but maybe make some noise, stay a safe distance. Make some noise, wave your arms around, if you can bang pots and pans together, or throw stick or squirt him with a hose something like that," said Yuchniuk.
Again the best bet is to keep your pets inside or at least in your sight.
