NORTH STONINGTON, Conn. (WTNH)-- An eleven-year-old girl is recovering Monday, after being hit by a propeller on a boat.
By most accounts this was just an awful accident and it comes just as more people will be hitting the water.
A lone boat rode along Wyassup Lake in North Stonington, where on Saturday an eleven-year-old girl riding in a boat with three other kids and her uncle, who was at the wheel, was thrown into the water and left with serious head injuries after being hit by the propeller.
"The accident, it could have happened at anytime to anyone. I heard from neighbors a little boy fell or something, and as the driver was reaching for him, he let go of the steering wheel or something, and the boat ran over the little girl," said Joseph Spano, North Stonington.
DEEP says there was no negligence and no alcohol involved. The little girl was on the bow of the 17 foot ski boat when it hit a wake, throwing her overboard. The boat ran over her.
DEEP says she remains in stable condition.
Even though it may not have helped in this accident, but DEEP says this accident could serve as a reminder that anyone under the age of 13 should be wearing a life jacket unless they are down below or on a cabin.
It's also a reminder to all passengers to make sure they hang on and are stable because it doesn't take much to go from inside a boat to outside it.
"Neighbors are upset, of course as they would be," said Spano. When asked if he thinks it's going to change boating habits, he said, "no, no I don't."
DEEP is not releasing the names of the uncle or little girl who are both from North Stonington where many are hoping she will fully recover.
