GROTON, Conn. (WTNH) -- The body of a woman was found in the water at Bluff Point State Park just after 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Rain poured down at Bluff Point State Park as police investigated what they called an untimely death.
A neighbor told News 8 that there is often police activity in the area, but every time she notices, she hopes that no one is hurt.
"We see this all the time and it's sad," said Denise Curtis, a neighbor. "It's very sad because I have two kids and I only pray to God nothing happens to them."
Despite her emotions, Curtis didn't know the deceased and neither did the man who stumbled upon the body. He didn't want to be identified.
"I'm more stunned than anything, I didn't expect to see that," he explained. "My heart goes out to 'em. Obviously [the family will] have some closure."
He and his friend were about to go for a jog when he noticed something in the water. He couldn't believe what he thought he saw.
"I was a little shocked, I wanted to think it was something else," he said.
Curtis says it's not unusual to see police lights and hear sirens in the area.
"We see them racing by a lot. Every time we just hope and pray that someone's not hurt," said Curtis.
Unfortunately, this time her fears were realized and police are still trying to piece together how it happened.
The Associated Press reports that the woman was identified as Tricia Beattie, 36, from Ledyard.
