STONINGTON, Conn. (WTNH)-- A Pawcatuck company is cashing in on something you drive over and walk over almost everyday, manhole covers. These however are custom made, and they say, better made.
"This is our largest size 42 inches in diameter. This is one of our smaller sizes this is 18 inches in diameter," said Jim Goodman, Fibrelite.
Fiberglass composite manhole covers, one custom made for the University of Colorado; A niche market and a lucrative one for this Pawcatuck company.
"They are incredibly strong. We have covers that go on airport runways. They won't rust," said Goodman.
Jim Goodman is president of Fibrelite's North American Division, six years ago he brought the British owned company to his hometown, starting off with seven employees in the 30,000 square foot space on Mechanic Street. It has now grown to 42 workers.
"They aren't stolen the way cast iron and steel covers are stolen because there's no way to melt it down and sell it for the scrap value," said Goodman.
These covers though are double the cost of the traditional ones. But the more they sell, the more competitive the prices will be. They pump out ten thousand a year from this Pawcatuck plant.
Another thing about these covers is that they're about a third of the weight of the cast iron covers you usually see outside. If it was cast iron, it would be more than a hundred pounds.
They can also be made watertight which could have come in handy with last week's flash floods which shut down the pumps because water got into the underground tanks.
When asked would it have prevented that, Goodman said, "absolutely."
While you won't find composite manhole covers on roads like that, but you will find them at gas stations like Mystic Mobil. This is the bulk of their business, 80 percent of the covers they sell are to gas stations.
