LISBON, Conn. (WTNH)-- The state has taken another step toward lessening its dependence on fossil fuels.
The project along with a wind farm in Maine is going to help the state comply with a federal mandate to have 20 percent of its electrical needs met with alternative energy by the year 2020.
The cornfield could soon start looking a bit more like the proposed Somers Solar Center which according to HelioSage had the distinction of being New England's Largest Solar Project...until now.
The solar center proposed for land in Lisbon and Sprague would produce 20 megawatts of power - more than twice the one in Somers.
Fusion Paperboard owns the land and will lease it to HelioSage which got the go ahead from the state.
"Our mill a hundred percent recycled paper and we care about the environment obviously very so much of the sustainability green energy so we made our land available for that project," said Ghislain Levesque, Fusion Paperboard.
When on the grid, that project along with the wind farm in Maine, will provide more than 3 percent of the state's electricity and could save rate payers an estimated $200 million over the next 20 years.
When asked what he thinks of it just being up the street there, Harry Patel, Harry's Market said, "very good. I should be the first one lower my bills."
By 2016 when both plans are expected to be on line, the cornfields there could be replaced by fields of solar panels. The tree line will stay along the road but back in the fields could look a whole lot different.
News 8 called HelioSage to find out how many jobs could also be produced. We're waiting to hear back.
"We're making better use of the land that we own," said Levesque.
The state could soon be seeking other alternative energy proposals which could include a biomass project.
