NIANTIC, Conn. (WTNH)-- Shops and restaurants along the shoreline are bracing for a business boom this Fourth of July weekend.
Businesses near the beach are hoping for a very happy fourth of July and they say it all depends on the weather.
They're hoping for a sizzling summer at Dad's Restaurant in Niantic, but they're also dealing with a soggy start to this holiday week.
"I turn on Channel 8 and I watch the weather. And hopefully, we have good news. That tells me what I have to order and what staffing levels we need here at the restaurant too," said Pete Salmonson, Dad's Restaurant.
Rainy days require fewer workers, sunny days mean a full staff.
Folks going to the Hole in the Wall beach in Niantic can't help but pass right by Gumdrops & Lollipops, so the owners there love a busy beach day.
And so does Lori Lusk who works the counter.
When asked would she say business doubles on a sunny day, Lusk said,"oh yeah, absolutely yes."
Even in bad weather folks come in for the homemade fudge, classic candies and Salem Valley Farms ice cream.
"They come for homemade pies," said Lusk.
"Some people park at the community lot and walk over here so they have to walk past some places when they go home," said Denise Smith, Niantic.
"It's either Dairy Queen or Frosty Treat, I haven't tried the new one yet but I plan on doing that soon," said Rosemary Hecker, East Lyme.
The biggest frustration for some of these businesses is when rain is forecasted for another part of the state and it still keeps people from coming to the shoreline, where it could be sunny.
