NIANTIC, Conn. (WTNH)-- Tuesday, crews are working to fix sewage problems in Niantic after problems at the pumping station sent two workers to the hospital.
The pump station is the one which sends all the sewage from East Lyme to Waterford, so when it went down the town had to act fast.
A portable generator is now running two of four pumps at the Niantic pump station. Fifty percent is better than it was when power went out completely at 9 Tuesday morning.
The biggest concern though, two workers injured when an electrical surge or interruption hit the station. Some heard an explosion and black smoke could be seen coming from the building.
"It knocked the guys over and burned up one of the panels," said Paul Formica, (R) First Selectman.
Those town workers were sent to the hospital for observation.
Workers with McVAC Environmental Services were already on site doing maintenance and have now brought in four of these pump trucks to clean out the wet wells so they don't overflow, if they don't get pumped out fast enough.
Before they got some power back to the pump station sewage was shooting up through a manhole cover and it also backed up into the toilets at the Bait and Tackle shop.
They're so used to this happening they have a way to divert the dirty water right back outside.
"With this down, we've asked our main users have been very cooperative, the prisons, the schools, to just throttle down the use," said Formica.
So fewer flushes and showers, so the system doesn't get overwhelmed again.
"Through the cooperation of everybody, we've been able to be down around 9 AM when it approximately happened and we were back up pumping stuff by noon, so that's pretty remarkable," said Formica.
Dealing with a power outage at the pump station is nothing new. They had to do it during Irene and Sandy when they were out for days.
NIANTIC, Conn. (WTNH) -- Two workers were sent to the hospital today after an electrical incident at a sewage pumping station.
Residents in East Lyme asked to conserve on sewage use, in other words, not to flush.
The two workers were conscious and talking, but were transported to the hospital for examination and treatment.
This is the pump station that sends all the sewage in town to Waterford.
A portable generator is now running two of the four pumps, and a crew from McVac Environmental Services is pumping out the wet wells at the same time so they don't get overwhelmed.
The cause of the surge is still under investigation.
