STORRS, Conn. (WTNH)-- Legal action taken by seven current and former students at UConn has the campus buzzing about the problem of sexual assault and their claims against the school.
On campus, members of the student body at the University of Connecticut say their thoughts are with seven women who say they were sexually assaulted during their time there.
"I think people aren't super happy," said a student.
"It really feels bad," said another student.
"I was shocked," said Amanda Simone, a sophomore.
On the campus of UConn, students are asking themselves if enough is being done to stop sexual assaults from happening.
"I think they're definitely taking cooperative steps but I think they could be doing more," said Simone.
"There are some people who don't feel comfortable," said Pearse McManus, a senior.
It's a problem, however students say is not unique to their school.
"I think any campus it's a somewhat of a problem," said a female student.
"I don't think you can have a college campus where it wouldn't be a problem, unfortunately," said Simone.
News 8 wanted to find out if the University of Connecticut was doing anything different in the wake of the sexual assault allegations to protect women. The request for an interview was denied.
They did issue this statement that reads in part:
"The well being of our students is our top priority," and that they "always must be mindful of the rights of the accused and the accuser while upholding our commitment to protecting the safety of our campus community."
But students there are speaking and they say the school does have programs in place to keep them safe.
"I think they have taken steps in terms of having a big police presence on campus and you have the blue lights and everything," said McManus.
"They're doing the best that they can," said Rashi Roy, a freshmen.
