New Haven, Conn. (WTNH) - The Albertus Magnus Falcons are soaring as the men's basketball team is off to a school best, a 20-and-1 start.
The reason Head Coach Mitch Oliver says is "Ray Askew."
Oliver is kidding. He has a well balanced team, but Askew is the star.
With over 2,000 career points and over 1,000 career rebounds, he barely received an college interest coming out of Career High in New Haven.
"I was definitely under the radar, I didn't have basically anywhere to go. I was just applying to schools and was just going to do the student thing," Askew said. "Met Mitch, he showed me around the school told me what he wanted to do with the program and I was interested and he said lets' do it."
Askew has helped the Falcons reach new heights thanks to conference titles and an NCAA tournament appearance.
His success shouldn't come as a surprise.
"He comes from a great basketball family, his aunt Tracy Claxton is one of the best women's players to come out of the state," said Coach Oliver. "His cousin Geary Claxton was an all big ten players at Penn State. The family tree is lone with a history of basketball."
But, Albertus is far from a one man show.
Along with Askew are star players Jefferson Lora, Darius Watson, Zach Dugas.
"Yeah we like to run, score points, we try to get a hundred every game," said Junior player Darius Watson.
"We're in the top 10 in scoring in the country, about 90 points per game, so we try and get up and down the floor we play a lot of guys," said Coach Oliver. "It's an exciting brand of basketball."
"This team came only go up," said Askew. "We got a lot of talent on the team, we have a great bench that I feel people haven't seen."
"We definitely could get better and we've been getting better, but every game is tougher," explained Coach Oliver. "There is a target on our back and teams are coming after us, so we have to be prepared."
