VERNON, Conn. (WTNH)-- Some harsh advice from his doctor is what did the trick. Martinus Evans had a weight problem and that advice has him running to a healthier lifestyle.
"When they see me and this big guy running, I want them to know there's a story behind this," said Evans.
The story started last year.
Martinus Evans went to see a doctor about his sore foot. The doctor's remedy was a tough one to swallow.
"You're basically too fat, you need to go to the running shoe store around the corner, buy some shoes and start walking," said Evans.
Evans was not only shocked by the doctor's blunt diagnosis, he was mad.
"I'm like no man screw you, I'll just run a marathon and I'll blog about it, that's what I'll do," said Evans.
And that's exactly what he's been doing. Evans runs several times a week and writes about it on his blog called 300 pounds and running.
On his site he shares the good times and bad of his weight loss journey. He says his story is unique to other weight loss and fitness blogs.
"Oh look at me, I'm so jacked, let's show you how to get six pack abs in six weeks, but you never hear about a 300 pound man trying to lose weight and run a marathon," said Evans.
When Evans started working out he tipped the scales at about 340 pounds, he's now down to 290, but it hasn't been easy.
"When people think about running, they think about sprinters, so it's like alright I'm gonna run for a minute and I'm gonna run as fast as I can for a minute, and then I'm gonna walk and it's like no, it don't work that way, you know you run slow, you walk slow, and you just kind of build up on that," said Evans.
Evans has run several races including his first half marathon last month in Fairfield. It took him more than 3 hours to do but quitting wasn't an option.
"I'm either gonna pass out or I'm gonna finish this race, but I'm not stopping and I did it," said Evans.
When he's not pounding the pavement, Evans is hard at work studying for his Masters Degree in Heath promotion at UConn.
His research starts at home. He's a weight loss blogger studying weight loss blogging.
And he plans on working on this project for the rest of his life.
"There's definitely no going back, after not being 300 pounds and knowing how that feels, it's definitely something I don't want to go back to," said Evans.
