DANBURY, Conn. (WTNH) -- I-84 Westbound in Danbury was closed Wednesday afternoon, after a man ran out on to the highway and was killed by a tractor trailer.
Police say they received reports of a pedestrian walking against traffic on I-84 west, right before they received reports a pedestrian was struck there by a tractor trailer.
A witness told police the 52-year-old Connecticut resident exited a friend's car in the area of exit 5, while making a comment consistent with contemplating suicide.
He then walked onto the highway against traffic, when witnesses reported a tractor trailer approached the right lane. The man then ran out into the right lane in front of the truck.
When the truck swerved into the center lane, the man ran to get in front of it again.
Police say at that point the collision was unavoidable.
The pedestrian suffered massive and fatal injuries.
Evidence was consistent with the witnesses statements, police said.
The operator of the truck voluntarily complied with a urine test and the truck was inspected. No charges for the driver are anticipated.
The incident closed the westbound lanes between exits 6-5.
State police troopers diverted traffic off the highway so state police could investigate.
The identity of the person killed has not been released. The highway has been reopened.
