UPDATE: The National Weather service has confirmed that a tornado touched down in the Windsor Locks area between 1:30 and 1:35 PM.
Winds were reported at 86 miles per hour. There were no injuries but extensive damage.
(WTNH) -- Communities in Northern Connecticut are assessing damage after a powerful storm that triggered a tornado warning hit the state. It was the second tornado warning of the day.
Several lanes of I-91 southbound between exits 45-44 were closed for a time after debris from the Sports World Dome in East Windsor were blown across the highway.
There was no confirmation that a tornado touched down.
Kathy Russotto, manager of the center, told News 8 sister-station WWLP there were 29 kinds playing in the dome and five counselors when the rain picked up. They evacuated the kids out of the done and into the building.
Nobody was hurt.
Russotto said it's the most damage she said the weather has ever caused.
The tornado warning for Northwestern Hartford and Northeastern Tolland Counties was triggered around 1:30 p.m., and expired at 2:00 p.m.
A bulletin from the National Weather Service said:
" At 149 pm edt Doppler radar still indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado near Enfield or 7 miles northeast of Windsor Locks moving northeast at 20 mph. The storm has been showing a weakening trend but still could be dangerous.
Trees and tree limbs were reported down in Windsor Locks with this storm. "
The damage from the storm caused hundreds of power outages in Windsor, Windsor Locks, and Enfield and East Windsor.
Earlier in the day, there was a Tornado Warning posted for parts of Fairfield County. There was no confirmation that a tornado touched down.
