Living Well: Summer Health Hacks

Summer is a great time for living healthy: It’s easy to get outdoors and be active, and there is lots of fresh produce to choose from.

But all those picnics and the parties can get in the way of healthy habits, so two-time breast cancer survivor and wellness writer Caryn Sullivan has some ‘health hacks’ for the warm months.

“It’s always important to stay hydrated, especially during the summer,” she said first.

One way to ensure you’re drinking enough water is by creating a drink schedule on your water bottle.

“Write down the hours when you’re going to drink a certain amount of water,” she explained.

For example, towards the top of a bottle, start with 9am. Then as you move down, write 10am, 11am, 12pm, etc.

Another way to help you hydrate is by infusing your H2O.

“You can take your favorite citruses and herbs or vegetables and let it sit in water overnight, or you can take frozen fruit and throw it into your water and throughout the day it’s going to infuse it,” Sullivan said.

Salads are a summer staple, but Sullivan has a hack to make preparing them even easier.

“Believe it or not, I love to chop my salad with a pizza cutter,” she explained. “It’s so easy and simple. You dump your lettuce out after you’ve cleaned it and you just roll it.”

If you’re trying to clean up your diet, Sullivan recommends drinking a smoothie a day.

“Because you pack in so many nutrients just in that jar alone,” she said.

They’re also portable. Her favorite summer health hack for making smoothies on-the-go?

“I make them the night before — I make them several nights before — and I’ll put them in the freezer,” Sullivan explained. “You pull them out in the morning and in the afternoon, they’re defrosted, and you’ve got your smoothie.”

And if you’re trying to get the little ones to drink up…

“I get kids especially my own to eat smoothies by putting them in a bowl and calling it smoothie ice cream,” she said.

Lastly, when it comes to upping your activity level, it doesn’t take as long as you might think.

“When I’m feeling lethargic or not interested in doing whatever that healthy habit is, I tell myself give it a 10-minute trial,” she said.

Apps like the ‘7 Minute Workout Challenge’ offer a circuit training session that can be done anytime, anywhere.

“Starting your day out with any healthy habit often times is going to set you up for success,” Sullivan said.
