Party on, Potter fans: “Fantastic Beasts 2,” prequel to author JK Rowling‘s epic Harry Potter franchise, arrives in theaters, with Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne reprising his role as Newt, a childlike wizard so soft spoken he makes Harry look like Rambo.
Redmayne gets the movie stolen right out from under him by Jude Law as young Dumbledore. There are five movies total planned here. Johnny Depp’s dark wizard, who we saw briefly at the end of the first film, is awesomely over the top, with the film opening with him escaping a flying prison, and getting bloodied and battered in the process. He used to destroy hotel rooms without so much as a drop, too.
Or if you’re up for something more rooted in reality there’s “Instant Family.” Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne as a married couple who decide maybe they should try this parent thing after all, and adopt a teenage girl who just so happens to come with two siblings.
It’s written and directed by Sean Anders, the guy who helmed Wahlberg’s last two comedies, “Daddy’s Home” and “Daddy’s Home 2.” Will Ferrell cameo anyone? Maybe as an uncle, a la Randy Quaid in “Vacation?” You gotta go to the movies to find out.
Both films are rated pg-13.
