Move over ‘Wonder Woman,’ there’s a new female superhero in town. Actually, the character was created in 1967, the year I was born. so, new….not really applicable.
“Captain Marvel” arrives, starring Oscar winner Brie Larson. The original Captain Marvel was a dude, but in 2012 the character “Ms. Marvel,” aka Carol Danvers, took over the mantle of captain in the comic book.
The movie opens with our hero’s memory being searched by a bad guy known as a Skrull. She’s a Kree Warrior, by the way. The Skrull is looking for something called “the lightspeed engine.”
Playing with her memory causes her to begin recalling a life on earth, when she was an Air Force pilot, so off she goes to 1995. The year of Drew Carey, Alanis Morrissette, and Mel Gibson winning an Oscar.
She meets up with Samuel L. Jackson‘s Nick Fury, with the CGI making him look just like Samuel L. Jackson in 1995, and begins down the road to realizing exactly who and what she is and the one to the Avengers.
And by that I mean this spring’s “Avengers: Endgame,” where Captain Marvel might just save the day.
Larson’s tomboy fly-girl is pitch-perfect. She’s is a welcome addition to the MCU – Marvel Cinematic Universe – and she wasn’t even the first choice to play the role. Rumor has it Ann Nyberg turned it down!
Captain Marvel is rated PG-13.
