At the Movies – “The Grinch” and “Girl In The Spider’s Web”

From Boris Karloff to Benedict Cumberbatch…man, Cumberbatch would be a great Karloff if they ever did a biopic there! But I’m talking about Benedict as the voice of “The Grinch,” a role Karloff made famous in 1966, and Jim Carey took on live action-wise in 2000.

We’re back to animation here, with the guys behind the “Despicable Me” franchise. Lots of famous names voicing the characters aside from “Sherlock” and “Doctor Strange” star Cumberbatch – SNL’s Keenan Thompson, Angie Tribeca herself, Rashida Jones, and even Angela Lansbury. I know – I thought she was too.

The story remains timeless, the message of Christmas being about more than presents still pitch perfect…Doctor Strange, I mean Doctor Seuss really knew his stuff.

Speaking of superheroes, that’s what some critics are calling Claire Foy‘s version of Swedish hacker supreme Lisbeth Salander in “The Girl In The Spider’s Web” – like that’s a bad thing!

Sure, last time around Salander was played by Rooney Mara in “Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.” Her take was more introspective, heavy on the mystery solving but light on the action.

“Spider’s Web” is action non-stop, described by some as “James Bond times ten.” Sounds good to me! Okay, so Mara got an Oscar nomination for her version. If that kinda stuff is important to you.

“The Grinch” is rated PG and “Girl In The Spider’s Web” is rated R.
