16-year-old Canton student heading to White House thanks to inventions

CANTON, Conn. (WTNH)–Sixteen-year-old Gabriel Mesa of Canton will be among 100 young people from around the country to take a trip to the White House. All are winners at their high school science fairs. Mesa will be showing off two of his inventions–the Stimu-Pen and the carbon battery.

“The Stimu-Pen is a shoe insert that generates an electrical charge when someone walks. It’s for people with diabetic neuropathy,” Mesa explained. “[They] often have pain in their feet, often get nerve damage, almost to the point where a lot of the time amputations occur. Seeing that, I decided to combine it with electricity and so taking those things together, I developed the insert that when you’re walking it’s providing stimulation that not only dulls the pain, but it eventually heals the nerves.”

Mesa says he enjoys science, and particularly math. “I use a lot of math in the Stimu-Pen project,” he said. “I had to develop an equation that would allow me to design the Stimu-Pen to fit someone’s foot.”

Mesa took his inventions to the Connecticut Science and Engineering Fair, and applied for the White House trip with help from the Connecticut Invention Convention.
